>Imagine a future where there’s no such thing as trash – there are only resources. Where residents of a region routinely reduce, reuse, recycle, and reconsider their consumption patterns to save money and support their community. That is the goal The City of Phoenix has embarked upon – to which Citizen’s help, has developed an integrated citywide strategy and campaign based on unique private/public partnerships and cross-sector collaboration.
A powerful coalition of partners has been assembled – including ASU, the Arizona Diamondbacks, Basha’s Supermarkets, Goodwill, PetSmart, Phoenix Suns, The Mayo Clinic, and Univision – to help take the message public and add cultural currency to the effort. The Diamondbacks, for example, held their first “Reimagine Phoenix” Zero Waste Spring Training event, encouraging other MLB teams that train in the Phoenix region to join them. Together, through on-going media and activities like these, we are helping to create a new cultural norm and model for civic engagement as we help reduce the amount of trash sent to the City’s landfills by 40% by the year 2020.
